The Amazing Spider-Man 2 Trailer Review

I will deliver as promised!  December 5th, the Amazing Spider-Man 2 trailer was released and the world got it’s first taste of the sequel to Marc Webb’s first attempt at the face of Marvel.

Spider-Man is my favorite superhero so it’s only appropriate that I give you my humble opinion.  I was very excited for this trailer because I really enjoyed the first movie.  The sour taste Spider-Man 3 left in my mouth was mostly washed out with Marc Webb’s version.  I’m not going to go into a criticism of the movie, but just know I enjoyed it and liked it a lot.

The trailer gives you a good look at Peter’s new suit and that he and Gwen are back together, even though he broke the promise to her dead dad (because that’s not a big middle finger right to her face).  I wasn’t sure what to think when I found out that there were going to be 3 villains because that was a big problem with Spider-Man 3.  What it implies though may be something awesome, but I’ll get there in a second.

Who are the 3 villains?  Electro, Rhino, and the Green Goblin.  Here are some immediate notes about their differences from the comics: Electro is blue skinned, Rhino is electronic, and the Green Goblin is Harry Osborne since Norman is dying thanks to Dr. Connors.  I don’t really care about Electro being blue or that Harry was going to be the Goblin, but I do worry that Rhino is going to be very different from the comics.  I guess a robot thing is a lot better than a guy in a gray unitard with a horn.

I’m not raging at the fact that it’s different than the comic, like some hardcore fans would do.  I actually think changing some stuff up is really cool if done right.  Why pay money to watch the same story that we already have heard?  Keeping the core ideas of the characters is all that’s needed.  That’s why Goblin and Electro don’t bother me with their differences.  Rhino doesn’t bother me, it worries me.  It makes me wonder if they’re going to make it work or if it’s going to be really dumb.  I guess we have to trust in Marc Webb and his writers.

There is something good about the trio of villains in this movie: The Sinister Six.  How do I know this?  In the trailer, there is point where a man is walking through Oscorp and you see some things in the background.  What do you see?  Doctor Octavius’ 4 arms and a pair of wings.  Who do the wings belong to?  An educated guess would say The Vulture.  “Well that’s only 3 of the original 6: Doc Ock, Electro, and Vulture.  Gobby and Rhino don’t have anything to do with it.”   I hear you.  Whether it was the Sinister Seven, or the Sinister Twelve, or some other reincarnation of the Six, Gobby and Rhino have been apart of it.  So this is another part of the original story-line that they’re re-writing.

This leaves loads of questions: Who is the sixth?  When will Venom be implemented (since they said Spidey will join the Avengers when Venom is implemented)? When will Gwen die? Are we going to have Six villains in Spidey 3?  Are the Avengers going to have to deal with the Six before or after Thanos?  I can’t answer these questions, I can only sit in the theater with you and enjoy these movies.
